How much should I feed my dog?

Highpoint raw pet food is produced in 1/4 lb squares; the average pet requires 1 square for every 10-15 lbs of body weight.

  • This is a guideline, but our experience is that we tend to be on the lower side of this guideline, but it greatly depends on the activity level of the individual dog.

30 lb dog: 2-3 squares per day

60 lb dog: 4-6 squares per day

90 lb dog: 6-9 squares per day

Feeding puppies is just as easy as feeding large dogs. I start puppies off at 2%-3% of their expected adult body weight.

Puppies up to 9 months should be fed 3 meals per day.

After 9 months and throughout adulthood: 2 meals a day

A Veterinarian's Journey from Kibble to Raw

The document "A Veterinarian's Journey from Kibble to Raw" outlines Dr. Judy Jasek's shift from promoting traditional kibble to raw food diets for pets. A DVM from Colorado State University, Dr. Jasek focuses on pet cancer treatment and criticizes the inadequate nutritional education in veterinary schools. She emphasizes the health risks of commercial pet diets and advocates for natural healing methods, including proper nutrition, detoxification, and supplemental treatments like ozone, herbs, CBD, and essential oils, aiming to reduce pet cancer incidence over the next decade.

Discover the Power of Raw: Boost Your Dog's Health!

Feeding your dog a raw food diet can offer numerous health benefits, as highlighted by Dogs Naturally Magazine. A raw diet typically includes a balance of meat, bones, organ meats, and fruits and vegetables, providing essential nutrients in their most natural form. This type of diet can lead to improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, and increased energy levels in dogs. As Dogs Naturally Magazine suggests, ensuring a balance of protein, fat, and micronutrients like calcium and vitamins is key to a successful raw diet. (Dogs Naturally Magazine).

FAQ's about a raw food diet

See some common questions and answers below, Is your question not here? Or do you have any other questions, let us know?

  • How much do I feed my dog?

How much raw food your dog needs will depend on their age, size, activity level and metabolism. A general rule of thumb is to feed by body weight and age. Active adult dogs will eat about one of our quarter-pound bricks for every 10 pounds of body weight or about 2-3% of body weight. Puppies will eat about double that and senior dogs will probably need less.

With puppies, you will probably want to divide the food into two to four meals a day (the younger the pup, the more frequently he should eat). With adult dogs, you can feed them as one meal or divide them into two.

Because you are providing very nutrient-dense food without fillers to your dog, you will probably notice that he eats a lot less by volume than he does process food. You will soon find the right amount to feed.

  • How do I serve raw food to my dog?

Our HighPoint Raw dog food is delivered frozen in convenient snap-apart bricks. Your dog’s ancestors were accustomed to eating frozen food in the wild over the winter months, so both thawed and frozen food are natural to her. It’s up to you and her. If you want to serve it thawed, simply put the next day’s portion in the fridge overnight. We do recommend feeding thawed food to puppies.

  • Why is there so much moisture in raw food?

Raw food contains up to 80% naturally occurring moisture, providing a natural source of water that dogs require. Carnivores were designed to obtain the majority of their water intake from prey animals in the form of raw food. In raw food that moisture is also loaded with vitamins and minerals. Rest assured that when it comes to HighPoint  Raw dog food, we take nothing out and add no moisture in.

  • What kind of dogs can eat raw dog foods?

Since 1995, dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes, and activity levels have been thriving on our HighPoint Raw food supplied by our manufacturer based in BC. Our food is fed to puppies, working dogs, breeding dogs, police dogs, and beloved pets who all deserve to eat wholesome, optimum nutrition that supports vibrant health, activity, and longevity. Transitioning to a raw dog food diet is nothing short of amazing for dogs. As any raw feeder would attest, the transformation in their animals is remarkable. Once on our raw food, dogs experience a healthy, soft, and lustrous coat, cleaner teeth, no bad breath, less body odor, and increased energy, focus, and happiness. Often, symptoms such as irritable bowel, allergies, food intolerances, overweight or underweight issues, skin conditions, diabetes, and degenerative disease disappear, which is just as exciting as the improvement in their physical appearance and overall health.

  • How do I start my dog on raw?

We recommend stopping your other food and jumping right into it. You may notice loose stools for a day or two, but they will normalize very quickly. Combining raw and heat-processed food is not a good idea. It can lead to digestive distress because heat-processed food takes much longer to digest.

  • Is there bacteria in the food?

Perhaps the largest controversy surrounding raw feeding is the presence of bacteria. This has been sensationalized by the giants of the dry pet food industry along with some biased veterinarians who have little knowledge of raw feeding or have never tried it.

What they fail to mention is the countless recalls of dry pet food due to salmonella, tainted ingredient scandals or unbalanced pet foods that have made it to market. Contaminated dry foods can cause bacterial problems to proliferate because of the bowel transit time slowdown processed foods cause. The real danger is when dogs have had their digestive tracts damaged through eating highly processed dead food and then are exposed to bacteria.

The facts are that healthy dogs do not succumb to bacteria from raw food, including salmonella. As carnivores, their bodies are designed to consume raw meat. Millions of years of evolution have ensured their short digestive tracts with highly acidic gastric juices and biological defenses are capable of consuming bacteria without ill effect. If this were not the case all of our pets’ wild counterparts would have dropped from the face of the earth long ago.

Just as when we handle raw meat products for our own consumption, we must simply use the same common sense approach when handling raw food for pets.

Many veterinarians are now recognizing the importance of raw feeding and have become strong supporters of raw diets. There are true leaders in the veterinary industry who bring raw feeding awareness back to the public. Working with an informed veterinarian is always recommended.

HighPoint Raw dog foods are prepared using the freshest sources possible. We use cold temperature freezers that destroy Salmonella and other pathogenic bacteria, without harming nutritional value. Packaging and boxing go in a low-temperature freezer environment. All of our blends are regularly tested.

  • My dog is a picky eater; what can I do?

You may be surprised how much he loves HighPoint Raw dog food because it’s the food his digestive system was made for. If he has a history of being really picky, you may want to start with Tripe. It’s strong taste and distinct smell is very, very appealing to dogs.

  • How is my HighPoint Raw dog food packaged?

To minimize plastic waste, we do not individually wrap portions of food. They come in sheets that are scored into quarter pound bricks for easy snap-apart convenience. The sheets are put into an industrial-strength plastic bag which is put into a heavy duty 30 pound cardboard box.

  • Does my dog need variety?

In the wild, the relatives of our dogs eat a pretty simple and predictable diet. They eat whatever is most commonly available to them. If you want to feed a variety of our raw blends to your dog you certainly can. Remember, though, that each HighPoint Raw dog food blend is formulated to provide everything your dog needs.

  • Can I just prepare my own food for my dog?

Of course you can. And to help you out, our Raw Chicken Base is what you need to help you get started just right.

But the question is why would you?

A certified canine nutritionist has formulated all our HighPoint Raw blends. Unless you have that expertise, do you want to be feeding your dog a haphazard mix of ingredients that might not help her be as active, vibrant and healthy as she deserves?

Plus, making raw dog food is a lot of work. (Trust us – we know.) Wouldn’t your dog rather be hiking the trails, strolling the beach, playing fetch, or just hanging out with you than sleeping while you spend hours in the kitchen?

  • What about food allergies?

Often dogs with food allergies are allergic to the unnatural and highly processed ingredients in commercial dog food. Many of our clients discover that those sensitivities go away once their dogs are eating HighPoint Raw food. If your dog is highly sensitive, our Raw Turkey Complete Blend is a great starting point.

  • Why are my dog’s stools smaller?

A raw food diet is pure and highly digestible. There is no filler that goes right on through the digestive tract and makes those big fluffy (and very stinky) stools. You will be surprised. And don’t worry if he strains sometimes to pass the stools. This can be beneficial because it stimulates the release of the anal glands which can decrease the possibility of impactions or infection.
