About FlatCoated Retrievers

Welcome to Highpoint FlatCoated Retrievers

In Loving Memory of Eve 13 years old, Forest 11 years old, and Autumn 12 1/2 years old

At Highpoint FlatCoated Retrievers, our journey is deeply rooted in the legacy of three remarkable dogs - Forrest, Eve, and Autumn. These beloved companions, who have now crossed the rainbow bridge, form the backbone of our kennel. Forrest, with his gentle spirit, was the first to embark on this eternal journey, followed by the wise and nurturing Eve, and most recently, Autumn, whose departure a few months ago has left a profound impact. Autumn, the mother of Luna and Eve the grandmother of Luna represent more than just lineage; they embody the heart and soul of Highpoint. Their legacy lives on not only in their direct descendants like Luna but also in the values and breeding excellence they have instilled in us. We honour their memory and celebrate the foundation they have laid for Highpoint FlatCoated Retrievers, a legacy of love, quality, and the unbreakable bond between humans and their canine companions.

About Us

Highpoint FlatCoated Retrievers is a small CKC-registered home-based kennel in Salmon Arm BC. We have had dogs of different breeds growing up. In 2015 we saw a flat-coated retriever online and fell in love with the breed.

Later that summer of 2015 we welcomed Rex into our home, and in 2016 his half-sister Luna joined our little family. We were introduced to confirmation shows by our breeder, and we got hooked right away, Although we were rookies our dogs Rex and Luna did fantastic in the show rings, and they both became Grand champions (GCH) in no time, I must admit we did use a handler once in a while.

We combine our joy of RVing and dog shows, catching up with other breeders, and friends, and meeting new dog families.

Breeding Healthy Dogs: Our Commitment to Better Bred Puppies

Our breeding program started in 2018 where we received our CKC-registered kennel name approval.

In 2019 we bred Luna and had 11 puppies, we kept our little girl Ella, and in 2020 Luna had another litter of four where our little girl Mylie is from, now our pack was full. In 2021 Luna then had her last litter of five where one of her puppies is now on his way to become a full-fledged service dog. Shortly thereafter Ella became a champion (CH) and Mylie became Grand Champions (GCH).

Ella had her first litter in 2022, a litter of eight that are doing great with their families, in fact all our puppies are doing great with their new families, we are lucky enough to stay in touch with most of the owners and also have had the joy of seeing some of the puppies when the owners come through Salmon Arm.

We enjoy breeding our dogs and are using tools such as Better Bred, Flatcoat Data and OFA as a guide to healthy puppies, by using these tools we are striving to improve the breed for generations to come.

OFA is a service that confirms the health of the Sire and the Dam, regarding hips, elbows, patella and eyes.

Better Bred is a facility that helps us make sure there is genetic diversity and locate rare genes in a small gene pool.

Flatcoat Data is a service we use to check the combined pedigree of the breeding going back four generations making sure we are not inbreeding.

We work hard on breeding strong healthy dogs with the right temperament, and behaviour that fit any pet owner.

OFA

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is a respected service in the dog breeding community, offering health certifications for both the Sire and Dam of potential litters. They rigorously assess the health of hips, elbows, patella, and eyes to ensure only the healthiest dogs are bred.

OFA's evaluations are crucial in identifying hereditary health issues in hips, elbows, patella, and eyes, preventing the breeding of dogs with potential health problems. For hip evaluations, they use the scoring system from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and the International Elbow Working Group, ensuring consistent and accurate results.

Besides hips and elbows, OFA examines the patella for abnormalities and screens eyes for hereditary diseases that could cause vision issues. Their efforts help breeders make informed decisions, promoting the health and longevity of the breed. OFA's dedication to responsible breeding ensures only the best dogs are chosen for reproduction.

Flatcoat Data

In our breeding program, the health and longevity of our dogs are of the utmost importance and take precedence above all else. To ensure we make informed decisions, we utilize the comprehensive resources provided by Flatcoat Data and firmly believe that making these informed decisions will ultimately benefit the well-being of our dogs.

In-depth Genetic Analysis: One of the key features that Flatcoat Data offers is the ability to conduct in-depth genetic analysis. The platform enables us to calculate the inbreeding coefficient (COI) of potential litters, ensuring we prioritize genetic diversity in our pairings.  This reduces the risk of inherited health issues and promoting the overall vitality of our dogs.

Comprehensive Pedigree Review: With our access to Flatcoat Data, we delve deep into pedigree analyses, providing us with insights that guide our breeding decisions.

Better Bred

Better Bred is a facility that plays a pivotal role in assisting us in securing and preserving the invaluable genetic diversity that exists within a limited gene pool.
